Modified Bitumen (MB) roofing is an asphalt-based system, similar to the Built-up-Roof (BUR) designed for buildings with low-slope roof structures.
CharacteristicsModified Bitumen gives designers and installers an even broader array of options than BUR. MB may be installed by the torch-application method, “hot-mopped” like BUR, applied with “cold-process” adhesives or self-adhered. Modified Bitumen or "modbit" membranes consist of an asphalt and polymer blend, which allow the asphalt to take on characteristics of the polymer. There are several surfacing option for this system which include a factory applied mineral surface, a gravel surface laid in bitumen or a liquid applied coating that is typically reflective in nature.
D.R. Kidd has installed several Modified Bitumen roofs including the University of Texas Kinsolving Dormitory, JJ Pickle Research, the AMLI on 2nd Condos and the Long Center for the Performing Arts. |
